See you at Enngonia Races

The second day of the 1934 Enngonia Picnic Race Club meeting. The photo shows the trophy presentation and sashing after the Cup – with the winner Camphor is her owner Will Ridge and his wife Gertrude holding the trophy. The jockey is Max Brown a member of the Brown family of Glengeera station. Camphor was the outsider in the betting and started at 10/1 which explains the very pleased look on the bookmaker’s face – Charlie Moxham – with his foot placed on the fence rail standing on his “stand”. The jockey standing on right of photo is the famous latter day Bourke trainer Tommy Lack – he had just ridden Lady Trebor to second place. The Enngonia Races are on this Saturday and organisers say it promises to bring a combination of quality bush racing and a picnic atmosphere.

Enngonia Race Club president Phillip Ridge said the Enngonia meeting also has the added attraction of a “State of Origin” competition between the best country horses and riders from Queensland pitted against the best in the Far West.

The races are held on the iconic Cato Station and attract punters, tourists and campers who enjoy the authenticity of a true outback race meeting. Read more in the printed edition of the Western Herald.
