St Ignatius Principal embraces Bourke life

The Principal at St Ignatius Primary School is a passionate career educator with a love of children, the bush, and his Christian faith.

In fact, John Cowan believes there was divine intervention at work when he swapped his busy city life for the bush.

“My faith is really important to me, so I always say the coming to Bourke was meant to be,” Mr Cowan said.

“The job somehow came to me across my email and I’m not sure how. I was actually praying to Mary MacKillop at the time, asking that I could be taken to somewhere that I was needed - and then this job came up, so I really believe it was meant to be.”

Mr Cowan began his teaching career 19 years ago in Parramatta and his passion for education has not diminished.

“I started in the Parramatta Catholic Education Office teaching various grades from kindergarten to Year 6, before I moved to the Northern Territory. I lived at a remote Aboriginal community called Wadeye where I was Deputy Principal for two years,” he said.
