Australia Opal Centre to open in 2025

Progress on the Australian Opal Centre building at Lighting Ridge is happening right under the watchful eyes of interested locals and visitors.

Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Opal Centre Jenni Brammall said the construction of the building is going ‘full steam ahead’, in spite of a recent short break due to rain.

“The emergence of the building is being shared with the community,” Ms Brammall said.

“Some time ago, we had a viewing platform installed so that people could come out and watch the work as it is happening and every day, we see people driving out to stay up to date with the development.

“It’s not often in a person’s lifetime that they get the opportunity to see something like this. To be able to see this, and then in years to come, to be able to say, ‘I was there. I saw it happening,’ is pretty amazing.”

The landmark tourism facility is expected to open next year and will draw people to Western NSW from all over Australia and the world to enjoy experiences that aren’t available elsewhere.

Ms Brammall said she hoped visitors will be inspired to take a deep interest in the wonders of inland Australia and Western NSW and go out and explore other places in Australia as well.

“The Centre is not just about opals,” Ms Brammall said.

“Our miners are digging through 100-million-year-old riverbeds and as they go, they find fossilised remains of plants and animals that were living here all that time ago that have been miraculously transformed into opal. […]
