Bourke Public School welcomes new teachers

Bourke Public School welcomed two new teachers to the staff this year – one who’s called Bourke home for four years and one who arrived just before the new school year began.

Derek Giles, his wife Molly, and young son Brodie are still getting to know their new hometown as he takes up his role at Bourke Public. It’s a far cry from his last teaching post in Melbourne.

“I grew up in Sydney and met my wife in Melbourne where I have been teaching for the past six years and we decided we wanted a change of scenery, somewhere in the country where there was a sense of community,” Derek said.

“We started looking at country jobs and there are schools everywhere and a need for teachers. We saw the position in Bourke and looked into it – things like childcare and so on – and it looked really good, so here we are!”

Derek is a Year Six teacher at Bourke Public School and Molly works in travel administration from home. The family has learnt some unexpected things about their new hometown, its culture and the rhythm of its day-to-day life. […]
