A new Bourke sign on the Mitchell Highway approach to Bourke has received huge approval from former and current residents of Bourke.

After being posted on the “All Things Bourke” Facebook site the new sign – which looks a lot like the “Hollywood” sign – has received over 1,000 likes and hundreds of positive comments.

To many travellers, Bourke is more than a destination, and to those who call Bourke home, it is more than just the place they live.

Now the massive new sign announces that you have just about arrived in one of Australia’s most iconic outback towns.

The Bourke sign sits on the Sydney Road, each letter is two metres high, and it is a dramatic welcome to the town.

The bold styling of the font and design is consistent with the new branding throughout the shire.

Bourke Shire Council General Manager, Leonie Brown, said it was exciting to roll out the next phase of the be-branding program which began in 2020.

“The new sign looks fantastic,” Mrs Brown said. “Council has been working on upgrades for quite a while when we had a review of our signage and branding and the new Bourke sign is part of that.

“We are very excited to have it installed 13 kilometres from town on the Sydney Road and it’s sitting very proud out there and looks great.

“We have two more Bourke signs to be installed and the villages will get a similar style, but not as large as the Bourke sign, which has 2-metre-high letters.
