Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager, Jeff Sowiak, has resigned and will leave Brewarrina to take up the General Manager’s position at Balranald Shire Council in the NSW Riverina district.

Taking on the General Managers role five years ago, Mr Sowiak, together with former Mayor Phil O’Connor, oversaw one of the busiest periods of activity in the Shire’s history.

Mr Sowiak has an impressive career in local government spanning more than 40 years, with 19 years as a General Manager on councils across four states, including NSW, QLD, Tasmania and Victoria.

His first taste of working in local government was on Wollongong Council and his last posting before coming to Brewarrina was in Boulia in far western Queensland.

“Firstly, I want to acknowledge the support and loyalty of the former Mayor Phil O’Connor and the councillors and staff at Brewarrina,” Mr Sowiak said.

“It’s been an incredible five years with the amount of grant funding we’ve been able to achieve and the projects we’ve been able to complete.

“It’s been an unbelievable period of growth in terms of economic development, and we have secured more than $50 million in grants.

“That has enabled the sealing of the Goodooga Road, the redevelopment of the Geoff New Oval clubhouse and the Brewarrina swimming pool, construction of new bore baths at Goodooga and many opportunities for local employment.

“We have adopted a deliberate strategy to increase local employment and train local people to work on these projects and I consider that one of my biggest achievements.
