Celebrating 25 years of Ronny Gibbs 7’s
This year’s Ronny Gibbs 7’s is shaping up to be a huge event, as the popular sporting tournament celebrates its 25th year.
Commencing in 1995 the event anticipated celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2020, but like many other sporting events across the country, it was cancelled due to COVID.
Played in August each year, the rugby league and netball tournament has attracted many high-profile rugby league players to Bourke like David Peachey, Nathan Merritt, Mario Fenech, Wendell Sailor, Greg Bird, Paul Vautin, and Matty Johns.
The 20th Anniversary of Ronny Gibbs 7’s was attended by NSW Blues coach and assistant coach Laurie Daley and Matt Parish.
This year’s event has a jam-packed three-day program covering more than rugby league and netball, with community events of lawn bowls and golf incorporated, culminating in a fabulous fundraising dinner.
Coordinator of Community Events Katrina Hausia said the Ronny Gibbs 7’s is an event all far west communities look forward to year after year.
“Ronny Gibbs 7’s allows every one of these far west towns to get involved. People form new friendships and revisit old ones each year.
“The Bourke community gets right behind it and the entire town is alive with lots of people and lots of things happening. It is an awesome vibe” Katrina said.
The annual fundraising dinner is always an entertaining night which puts money into the Bourke community to help fund local kids and support their sporting dreams.
“Ronny brings a heap of merchandise and footy superstars, and they host an auction and dinner. It is always a brilliant night.
“Everything Ronny does is to give young people sporting opportunities. He just wants to do whatever he can to help kids have opportunity in sport, just like he did,” Katrina said.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Ronny Gibbs 7’s, Ronny will be bringing some talented, energetic, high profile players this year, but he’s keeping that under his hat a little longer yet.
Lawn bowls and golf have been included in the program as part of the 25-year celebrations with teams of 4 bowlers playing at the Bourke Bowling Club on Monday 23rd August from 5.30pm, with a free barbeque provided.
A 4-man Ambrose golf event will be played over 9 holes starting at 12 midday on Tuesday 24th August at the Darling River Golf Course.
Wednesday 25th features the Rony Gibbs 7’s Gala Rugby League and Netball event, followed by the Fundraising Dinner at the Back O’Bourke Exhibition Centre.
