Community support for Hudson Fire victims
Lightning Ridge residents are pulling together after their neighbours in the Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard opal fields were ravaged by the Hudson Bushfire
This fire resulted in significant property losses and the the tragic death of Captain Leo Fransen, a volunteer firefighter from the Diamond Beach RFS brigade.
Amidst this calamity, the local community demonstrated an incredible spirit of solidarity and support.
The Lightning Ridge Golf Club, led by President Brad Loiterton and Vice President Rachel Fretwell, quickly recognised the urgent need for assistance.
Given the strong ties between Lightning Ridge and the opal fields, which are about 75km away, yet intimately connected to many of its residents, they organised a fundraiser.
The event raised over $8000 on the night to help those who had lost everything to the fire.
Support has grown as more donations come to the Golf Club’s account, dedicated to the disaster fund.
On Wednesday, November 22, Brad Loiterton, golf club committee member and firefighter David Smith, and concerned residents Steve Beadman, and Nikki Baillie came together to distribute the first tranche of funds.
Among the beneficiaries was a couple who, after lost everything, received cash, food and fuel vouchers.
Faced with the daunting prospect of rebuilding at an advanced age, they have decided to relocate to North Queensland to be with family despite a six-month wait for housing assistance. […]
