Flood warnings on the Barwon Darling

Recent heavy rains across the northwest of NSW have emergency service on high alert for potential flooding, but the rains bring good news as well.

Last week, flooding peaked at Collarenebri at 6.35 metres, while the river rose a metre in 24 hours in Walgett and on Tuesday had peaked above the minor flood height of 10.5 metres at 11 metres.

Many unsealed roads have been closed across Bourke, Brewarrina, and Walgett Shires. In Collarenebri, the tip was closed until further notice, with Walgett Shire Council providing two skip bins available for disposal of rubbish.

Walgett Shire Council General Manager Megan Dixon said council staff have been kept on their toes.

“While it’s been beautiful soaking rain, we’ve also endured wild storms which impacted Carinda and Rowena a few weeks ago. We’ve had many roads closed right across the Shire because of it,” Ms Dixon said.

“I want to remind drivers to take a lot of care, particularly if travelling in a small car. Don’t take risks if you don’t know. […]
