From Nigeria to Bourke — New doctor embraces life in the Outback

After working his way around the world, a new doctor has settled in Bourke to work at Ochre Medical Centre, and he says the isolation here is not much different to his native Nigeria.

Dr Taofeek Abiola Usman is a dedicated and experienced General Practitioner with a diverse international background.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of surgery (MBBS) from a medical school in Nigeria, followed by a Masters of Public Health (MPH) from Charles Darwin University in Australia.

With a professional career spanning several countries, Dr Usman has worked extensively in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and London. His experience in various healthcare systems has equipped him with a broad perspective on patient care.

Dr Usman’s areas of expertise include emergency medicine, chronic health condition management and men’s health. He is committed to providing comprehensive care, focusing on preventive health and the management of complex health issues.

His compassionate approach and commitment to patient well-being make him a valued asset in the local healthcare community. Dr Usman first came to Australia in 2016 and didn’t know what to expect.

“I never imagined I would end up in Bourke,” Dr Usman said.

“When I first arrived in Australia, I moved to Darwin to study and finished there in 2018. After finishing my Public Health studies, I got a job but really wanted to do clinical work which I couldn’t do then. I decided to leave Australia for Saudi Arabia where I was stuck during Covid when there was also a war going on.

“After Covid, Australia locked its borders and so I went to London where I worked in an emergency department which I love. […]
