Leap of faith brings Huw and Thea to Bourke

It’s a long way from life as a hairdresser in Melbourne to principal of Bourke’s Koinonia Christian Academy.

However, this is the leap of faith that Huw Norris took, replacing Pat Amos, the long-term principal of 44 years who retired in October.

Mr Norris has been in Bourke in his role as principal of Koinonia School for almost eight weeks and had never been to Bourke prior to taking this position.

“I was living in Melbourne where I’ve lived for most of my life, and I saw an ad for the principal’s job at Koinonia and applied,” Mr Norris said.

“I have no links with Bourke and had never even been here until I came to assume the principal’s position at Koinonia. As people of faith, my wife and I prayed about our decision to move.”

Prior to coming to Bourke, Mr Norris was director of students at Kamaruka School in Melbourne’s south, which caters for boys with ADHD.

“I had been there for nine years, and that was actually my first teaching role,” Mr Norris said.

“I began my working life as a hairdresser, moved into pharmaceutical sales, a pastor at our church in Melbourne, and then did my Postgraduate Diploma of Education and started working at Kamaruka Education Centre in South Yarra.

“It was time to try to step into a senior leadership role and I applied for a couple of positions in Melbourne that I didn’t get, so I started looking further afield and when the job in Bourke came up, I thought maybe this is something that we should be doing.” […]
