Four agriculture students from Lightning Ridge Central School recently traveled to Dubbo to compete against schools across NSW in the School Merino Wether Challenge.

The LRCS team showed their wethers and were judged in a two-day competition at the Rabobank National Merino Show.

Teams were assessed and awards were presented for the highest estimated earning capability over a five-year period from both wool and carcass, the highest commercial wool value, the highest commercial meat value, and an overall champion team.

Points were awarded based on students’ sheep handling, dress and presentation and knowledge of the Merino industry.

The Lightning Ridge team was presented with the following awards:

First Place – Rangelands Region Wool Value

Second Place – Rangelands Region Combined Value (Wool and Carcass)

Second Place – Rangelands Region Carcass Value

Third Place – Combined Regions– Wool Value

It was an impressive achievement for the Lightning Ridge students, after this second year entering the challenge, and the first year the students have been able to attend, due to Covid restrictions in the previous year.

Congratulations to the LRCS team!
