Pools open at Bourke and Bre as heat strikes

The Bourke and Brewarrina swimming pools are now open for business and ready for an expected long, hot, El Nino summer ahead.

An it’s not before time with Bourke and Bre expected to both nudging 40 degrees Celsius over the long weekend.

In Bourke, the construction of the much-anticipated new kiosk has been held up - but the refurbished Olympic pool, ‘program’ or ‘little’ pool, and Splash Park meant there was still plenty of summer fun ahead.

Newly appointed manager of the Bourke pool, Scott Parnaby, said it was disappointing that the new kiosk was not ready for the beginning of this season, but the community had rallied to help and there would still be plenty of hot chips, cold drinks, and ice creams from the makeshift kiosk.

“We were hoping for the kiosk and other facilities would have been built in time for the season, but there have been so many hold ups getting tradespeople and equipment, so unfortunately we could not open the new building in time for the season,” Scott said.

“We’ve had great support from the local community though, with the Bourke Junior Soccer Club loaning us their transportable kiosk now that their season is over.

“So, we transported the container they were using to the pool and we’ve had generous donations of equipment so that we can operate temporarily from that site.

“We’ll be able to offer hot chips, hotdogs, all the usual ice-creams and drinks and there will still be plenty to offer families and kids when they come through the turnstiles.

“The pools and the Splash Park look great, and we are gradually working on the surrounding landscape, which have been affected by the equipment bringing in the container and the demolition of the old building, but we are working on it bit by bit,” Scott said. […]
