“The Neville Simpson Sportsground”
It’s taken just over a year but moves to change the name of the cricket ground at North Bourke have now been officially approved.
At the November 2023 meeting of Bourke Shire Council, correspondence was received from local man, Les Bunyan requesting Councillors rename the cricket ground at North Bourke, as “The Neville Simpson Memorial Sports Ground.” A petition signed by 118 people in support of the suggestion was also presented to council.
Mr Bunyan said that “Neville was a highly respected Bourke resident who demonstrated a strong dedication to the Bourke community through-out his very long life.”
The matter was deferred until early 2024, giving General Manager, Leonie Brown time to find details of Mr Simpson’s community involvement and seek the thoughts of Mr Simpson’s family about the renaming proposal.
“In mid-January, I met with the widow of the late Mr Neville Simpson, Mrs Pam Simpson, to seek the thoughts of the Simpson family as to the naming proposal and ascertain further details of Mr Simpsons community involvement,” Mrs Brown said.
“Mrs Simpson and family are happy with the proposal and appreciate the fact that Neville may be recognised for his long association with, and contribution to the Bourke area.” (…)
