On Saturday, amidst the rain and wind looming over Algy Friend Oval, Walgett won the men’s and women’s 2022 Western Plains Rugby Union Grand Finals.

The day kicked off with the Ladies Tag Grand Final between the Walgett Ewes and the Gulargambone Flamin’ Galahs.

Winning the toss and choosing to kick off, Walgett put on the pressure early with some enterprising play which eventually got them over the line.

After letting Walgett race out to two tries ahead, the Galahs attack found momentum and, thanks to a kick into the backfield, they found themselves over the line and took the score to 2 - 1 going into the break.

Following the half-time break, the scores remained the same for much of the third quarter, with both teams’ defence holding firm – it was a matter of who would break first.

Walgett eventually broke through Galahs’ defence to score, which opened the floodgates, with Walgett scoring multiple tries to take them to a comfortable lead.

In the end, Walgett was too good, winning 6-1, to cap off an outstanding season for the Walgett Ewes.

In the men’s Grand Final between the Walgett Rams and the Warren Pumas, the crowd emerged from undercover to cheer their teams on in the drizzling rain.

These two teams met two weeks before in the Major Semi-Final and on that occasion, Walgett put on a show to easily beat Warren 30 - 0.

This game would prove not so easy for Walgett as Warren took the game to a dogfight in the first 20 minutes, refusing to yield in defence.

But eventually, Walgett broke through to score in the corner and, after receiving the kick-off, quickly marched themselves upfield to score again, bringing the score to 10 - 0.

Warren held strong, not letting the score get away from them, and on the stroke of halftime, they broke through the Walgett defence to bring the score to 10 - 5.
