Wanaaring isolated by major flood peak

The town of Wanaaring, 200 kilometres west of Bourke has been isolated as a wall of water moves down western rivers from huge Queensland rains.

The Paroo River at Wanaaring rose faster than predicted earlier this week and all roads into Wanaaring were closed by flooding on Monday.

Hannah Brown from the Wanaaring Store said the water had come a lot more quickly than expected and the town was now isolated.

“We’ve been flooded in and we’re unable to go anywhere, with water around us and at both ends of the town, we’re an island,” Hannah said.

Wanaaring has been nervously waiting for the Paroo River to peak near 5.30 metres –above previous flood peaks of 4.88 metres in 1990 and the 2010 flood of 4.80 metres. […]
