Water security on the way for Lightning Ridge
Concerns raised by the Lightning Ridge community about ongoing water security have helped Walgett Shire Council obtain funding for long overdue improvements to the town system.
Around 5.1 kilometres of water pipeline will be installed, along with upgraded booster pumps and high-tech monitoring equipment to improve reliability of the Lightning Ridge water supply.
Since 2023, the town has relied on a single operational bore after infrastructure at one of the two existing bores, located five kilometres apart, failed due to age, corrosion and extensive weather damage.
The original pipeline which transferred water from one bore into town was taken offline last year after it showed significant signs of rusting and water loss, putting local water quality at risk.
Since then, Lightning Ridge’s water supply has been under immense pressure, with locals concerned the system would fail completely.
Member for Barwon, Roy Butler said he had been advocating strongly for funding to build new water infrastructure for Lightning Ridge.
“It’s great news for the community that this project has now been given the green light,” Mr Butler said. (…)
